Julie Larose & Aidan Douglas
Their courtship...
began on March 10th, 2004 during their first year at the University of Ottawa. Julie was studying in History and Political Science at the time, as well as working as a Parliamentary Page in the House of Commons. Aidan, on the other hand, was an English major. They lived seven floors apart in the luxurious New Residence, but never ran into each other.
... at least until the November evening of the annual United Way concert. Both had signed up to perform. Aidan was slated to sing a traditional Irish melody, whereas Julie brought showed her class by singing Faith Hill's "Piece of my Heart". She was also singing with the Residence Life Choir. After Aidan's number, when Julie saw him coming up the aisle to his seat, she commented on how much he reminded her like a crooner from the fifties. The look he gave her convinced her he was a bit of a snob, but to this day, Aidan, who is very shy in these situations, insists that he was just caught off-guard by such a strange comment.
A few weeks later, Aidan joined the choir Julie was in.
The next event event of importance was Julie's illness at the end of February. She caught pneumonia, effectively putting her life on hold for the next few weeks. Once she recovered, she still missed out on many of her activities, as she had to catch up on school work. On one such evening, she went downstairs to the cafeteria to catch a quick supper so that she could finish an essay. Aidan was doing his laundry accross the way and came in to get change for his laundry card. No one can remember what Aidan said that night, but it led to Julie keeping him company while his laundry finished, and they have been inseparable ever since. And the essay? Let's just say that it was a few days late, but how it was ever worth it!
Their engagement...

Senate of Canada, Centre Block, Parliament Hill, Ottawa, ON
February 4th, 2006
As per Julie's description here: (you have to have
"So, Model Parliament didn't start up so well. I only joined the CCCP or the Canadian Christian Coalition Party because Aidan wanted to be in it so badly. My best friend was in the party, but I cannot stand the leader at all. There are no limits to what point I dislike this guy; no joke. Everybody was psyched about my nun costume... except him. He barely even acknowledged anything that everybody was doing for the party, all he cared about was making sure that he could make his own jokes, and that's it. So I came home last night, completely defeated and frustrated. Then, I had to do some damage control with a stupid member of St. John, and it was not pretty. I was ready to cry. Aidan assured me, though. "Don't worry, you'll at least find something that you'll like about this Model Parliament." Understatement of the year! By the next morning, I had decided to defect to the Non-tario Party, but not after being courted by the Prime Minister to join his party. I made my statement about it in the House, after taking my new seat. Then Question Period came and Aidan stood up to ask the first question. After being recognized, he began:
"Thank you Madame Speaker. With the recent defection of one of our members, I feel something like Peter MacKay. (TN: To which everybody awed a little bit, realizing that we were actually dating) However, unlike Peter MacKay, I feel that politics should not get in the way of love. (More awing.) And so, I would like to ask if the member from Random-Burin-St George's if she would marry me."
Everybody was shocked! Stunts like this had been pulled before, specifically last year when two members of the Feminist party jokingly got engaged to prove a point about gay marriage. People whispered nervously, wondering wtf was going on!
I apparently turned to him, looked at him, and asked "Are you joking?"
At this point, Aidan pulled a ring from his pocket, and started moving down his aisle towards mine, and I realized he was entirely serious. It didn't actually register until he was in front of my desk, on one knee. It was excruciating to not know what was going on and just as he was about to put the ring on, he was STOPPED BY THE SPEAKER!
"Unfortunately, you cannot address the honourable member, your questions must be directed at the government. However, you may direct your question through someone else."
Aidan, taking it all in stride, answers "Very well, Madame Speaker, I will return to my seat," and he did. He then improvised, "Madame Speaker, will the...uh...Prime Minister ask my girlfriend if she will marry me?"
The prime minister, our new friend Nicolas, was completely flabbergasted! "uuuhhh...SECONDED!?!"
Aidan does the long trajectory back to my seat and gets down on one knee, and whispers: "And you have to answer through the speaker, you know."
Of course, I'm completely blank in trying to think of something brilliant to respond with: "The honourable member accepts."
Apparently, we have made Senate History: nobody has ever proposed in there. The only thing that would have made it better is if we were both real MPs! ;)
